Nova Scotia announces its Community Housing Growth Fund

Today the Province of Nova Scotia announced the creation of a $2.5 million growth fund for community housing, which includes non-profits and co-operatives. The fund will be administered through the federal Community Housing Transformation Centre and will allow housing providers/associations to apply for funds for capacity building, planning and building pre-development work, research and innovation. It also will fund the creation of a provincial non-profit housing association, FINALLY! (Props to Pauline MacIntosh at St. FX for her recent research and outreach with hundreds of NS non-profits in the past year, who came to the exact same conclusion with CHTC funding!)

Not only was the Community Housing Growth Fund a recommendation of the Nova Scotia Affordable Housing Commission (which, you may remember, I co-chaired last year), it’s also in line with the federal budget announcement to spend much more on community housing development than it has so far under the National Housing Strategy.
