I had a great time as usual at the Canadian Institute of Planners annual conference in Montreal last week as many of our School of Planning alumni won awards: Steffen Käubler was made a Fellow of the CIP, our alumni Lyndsay Francis and Brianna Maxwell were part of the team that won an award for the Cape Breton Housing Strategy, and Ella Gindi was part of the team that won for Lunenburg’s Coast Management Strategy (she and manager Jeff Merrill were there to accept). Our alum Elora Wilkinson accepted the award Halifax Regional Municipality, which won an award for the Cogswell District work, and our students Mo Li and Kieran Brown won Outstanding Graduating Student awards.
I presented the work from Silver Buckshot in the last possible timeslot on Thursday. Despite this timing, we still managed a crowd of about 70 attendees. I sold 20 copies at the book over the three days of the conference, which means I donated $70 to Mission Old Brewery in Montreal (30% of my royalties). I also had pre-orders for 24 copies through my website.
The print on demand version of the book was launched just after the conference, on July 10th. This morning I saw this incredible news:
And even more insane, the book was listed as “Hot New Releases in Regional Planning Policies”! These things are constantly changing, but nevertheless it’s pretty thrilling to see my book up there with Planning on the Edge (Penny Gurstein and Tom Hutton, eds.), a collection edited by my UBC professors.
I could not have asked for a better week with my colleagues and promoting the book. Thanks everyone for your support!
