As most of you know, my Ph.D. research was with the Filipino community in Toronto, and I developed close ties with a number of the community organizations and service providers in the region. I’d like to encourage you to help out the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in any way you can:
- Donate through the Canadian Red Cross
- If you’re in Vancouver and have ties to UBC, my former colleagues at the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP)Â are raising money through their Holiday Party on Nov. 29th by asking for donations when they sell tickets.
- Two Vancouver agencies are partnering with agencies in the Philippines to assist victims:Â Migrante BCÂ is partnering with the NCCP Protestant chapters in Leyte and Samar and the Filipino Seniors Club of BC is partnering with the Rotary Club of Bohol to raise funds.
- Sign the Change.org petition to ask Rogers, Bell, and Telus to allow Filipino Canadians to call their relatives back home without getting hit by massive long distance phone charges. AT&T and Verizon are already doing this in the US
- Contact the Filipino Community Centre in Toronto to assist in their fundraising efforts
The Canadian government will match all funds raised for typhoon victims between Nov. 8th and Dec. 9th.
