For a few months, Cherise Burda and I have been working on a podcast supported by Connor Sampson, Aminah Faubert, Jonathan Burns and Rhys Waters at Podstarter in Halifax. We hope to bring the voices of community organizations running community land trusts and scholars studying housing issues such as gentrification to our listeners.
New Housing Alternatives features solutions to our most pervasive housing problems. Through a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Partnership Grant (co-led by Alan Walks and Susannah Bunce at University of Toronto) we’re asking questions about tenant displacement and advocacy, what cities can do to protect low-end of market rental units, and how non-profits building and funding new units. The grant has both academic researchers and community partners, and they’re encouraged to work together on these types of questions. You can listen to the podcast trailer here (Spotify) to get a sense of what it will be like.
Our first episode features Ray Sullivan, CEO of the Canadian Housing Renewal Association, and Dr. Alex Flynn, professor at the UBC Allard School of Law and Director of the Housing Research Collaborative. Alan and Sue also introduce the project. It will be released October 17th. Find us wherever you find podcasts!
